Osteopathy as a Health Service
Historically, Osteopathy in South America is relatively young, mainly developed in countries such as Argentina and Brazil. In Chile for about 10 years osteopathy has been growing slowly within specialized healthcare professionals in rehabilitation presenting a lot of tools to solve the different patient problems.
In Chile we have used osteopathy effectively to treat various pathologies within the area of health. Diversity within osteopathy means that treatment has an approach to any type of problem, although there are pathologies that are most commonly treated with osteopathy in Chile within which it is worth mentioning; Musculoskeletal disorders, digestive problems, headaches, auditory and neurological disorders.
Among the most important techniques of osteopathic treatment are the cranial techniques that commonly deal with some pathologies of the central nervous system, vertigo, headaches, bruxism, anxious disorders, among others; Visceral techniques are mainly focused on improving the internal operation of organs and how they relate to the different tissues that surround them and finally are the myofascial techniques that with them seek to normalize dysfunctions of this extensive tissue that connect organs, muscles, bones and nervous system, as well as being a very important support for the lymphatic system.
Status of Recognition
Osteopathy in Chile is not a university career. However, osteopathic manipulation is described within the scope of practice of a physical therapist according to the standard stipulated by the national health fund, which makes osteopathic manipulation most commonly performed by physical therapists in Chile.
The legal code of physical therapy does not stipulate osteopathic manipulation, this leaves a legal gap and does not make clear which health professional can practice osteopathy. Taking this information into account, it is important to make it clear that in Chile osteopathy is not regulated and there is not a governing body that has legal faculties to dictate academic standards.
