Osteopathy as a Health Service
In the Philippines at the initial stage of practice, osteopathy was more on management of musculoskeletal cases: sprain, strain and other injuries. As the practice of osteopathy grew, it has been found useful for vertigo, headache, myofascial pain syndrome and even cancer.
People who have tried other means of therapy are now moving to osteopathy. There are also osteopaths studying and treating cases of women's health, pelvic issues and sports.
Status of Recognition
In 2017, Philippine Institute for Traditional and Alternative Healthcare (PITAHC) under the Department of Health (DOH) recognized Osteopathy as a healthcare profession.
In 2021 PITAHC formed the National Certification Committee for Osteopathy (NCCO) to regulate the practice of Osteopathy.. With NCCO only osteopaths with legitimate education training will be certified. Osteopathic education from The Osteopathic College of Ontario (OCO) as a postgraduate education combined with healthcare degrees of PT, OT, Nursing, or MD meets the NCCO requirements for the legal practice of Osteopathy in the Philippines.
